We turned in for some sleep during the 9-hour trip between Sitka and Hoonah, a Tlingit community of less than 1,000 on the north coast of Chichagof Island. To reach Hoonah, the ferry retraced its steps through the Narrows and Peril Strait, then turned north up Chatham Strait and west into Icy Strait between Chichagof Island and Glacier Bay.

This photo shows Hoonah as the ferry and the sun arrived together just before 4:00 a.m. [We set our alarm to wake us at 3:00 a.m. If you do this trip, take an alarm clock or you'll miss the best parts.]
