Electronic Voting

April 17 , 2006 :

Pat planned to go to Washington with our friend Vicki to lobby on Capitol Hill on April 6-7 under the auspices of Common Cause and the I Count Coalition. The purpose of this effort was to support HR 550, introduced by Rep. Holt of Hew Jersey. This bill is intended to protect the integrity of US elections by requiring a voter-verified paper record of every vote, performing mandatory random hand-counted audits to verify the accuracy of electronic tallies, and prohibiting the use of secret software and wireless communication devices in voting machines. She aborted the trip when Laurie's health rapidly deteriorated, and instead signed a petition in support of the bill.

The problems with counting votes accurately are legion and well documented. As our democratic rights slip away through our fingers under the Bush administration, HR550 offers a hook to hang onto the remnants - and maybe one day reverse the tide.
