Memorialized in a folk song, John Luther Jones (1864-1900) was a railroad engineer who was nicknamed after the town of Cayce, Kentucky, where he worked. Through his heroic action when driving the Cannon Ball express from Memphis, Tennessee, to Canton, Mississippi, he applied the brakes in time to save the lives of all the passengers on his train when it wrecked at Vaughan, Mississippi. He was the only one to die in the wreck.
