In the spring of 2005 we camped on the Mississippi near Thomson, IL. Great biking nearby, including passing a gleaming prison. We later learned the Thomson Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison built by the state of Illinois 3 years previously at a cost of $150 million. It has a capacity of 1,800 beds. Thomson built a new water and sewage plant to accomodate the prison, anticipating about 750 new jobs. Evidently the state didn't have the $50million annual operating money, so the place stood empty still, using $2 million a year to sit idle. There's a story behind this one.
